>It's why the long negative review can be so kind.
Whenever I devote time to criticize something at length, its always a work that I enjoyed (either a book, a TV show, a game, etc.). Feels strange but ultimately it comes down to what you've said :
>there is something within the discipline that you’re passionate about, regardless if you were able to find it in this particular work
I would say go on to say that if you've written a long (negative) review about something, you must have found at least a piece of the whole that you are passionate about. Even if the book is an abysmal dreck, if you've devoted an hour of your time to drag it through the mud (in a masterfully written goodreads review, of course), it means you see a glimpse of gold in the mud, right?
>The ultimate content awaiting its ultimate consumer.
You make a good point! At the very least, I would say writing a long, detailed negative review expresses your love for the medium, looking for possible areas of growth you would like it to explore. Maybe it's a way to appreciate artistic creation in itself, as well... I guess locating north also shows you south and vice versa, if that makes sense.
